Stuart J. Edelstein is Professor Emeritus, University of Geneva, where he joined the faculty in 1986. After a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley in 1967 and postdoctoral research at the Pasteur Institute with Jacques Monod, he spent 18 years at Cornell University, Ithaca NY.
Stuart is a Foreign Associate of the French Académie des Sciences and served as Editor-in-Chief of its Proceedings Comptes Rendus Biologies 2001-2008. He held the International Chair at the Collège de France 2002-2003, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 2003. He served as President of the Swiss Biophysical Section 1994-1998, member of the Scientific Commission, Curie Institute Research Section 2002-2009, and Scientific Director of Biofutur (the major French biotechnology magazine) 2002-2017. He is cofounder and President of the Scientific Advisory Board of Genomic Vision, a spin-off of the Pasteur Institute.
Stuart has published over 100 research articles and six books including DES GENES AUX GENOMES (2002) and THE BRAIN AS A CHEMICAL MACHINE with Jean-Pierre Changeux (2005). Professor Emeritus since 2006, he has continued research and teaching at the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Babraham Institute, the University of Rome, the National University of Singapore, University College London, and Stanford University, He was appointed Professeur Extraordinaire in 2013 at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris. In 2017 Stuart cofounded Scipio bioscience, a Paris-based biotechnology startup developing an alternative sample preparation solution for single-cell studies.
