Derren is a consultant clinical scientist in Public Health Infection for the South West of England and head of the Respiratory and Systemic Bacteria Reference section at PHE Colindale. He has worked in the research, primary diagnostic, public health and reference laboratories in the area of microbiology and infectious diseases. He completed his PhD at UCL in 2005, for which he investigated the incidence & transfer of antibiotic and mercury resistance in the microbiota of children. He has specialised in the use and development of molecular diagnostic tests for the identification and characterisation of respiratory, systemic and gastrointestinal pathogens and has published 66 peer reived articles in this area. Derren has an interest in use of WGS data to support outbreak investigations.
