James S. Ware is the Director of Purification Development and Lab Operations at Ligand Pharmaceuticals and has worked in process development for 14 years. He has led purification development for internal and partnered programs including vaccines for anthrax and malaria, and biosimilars to ranibizumab, filgrastim, pegfilgrastim, teriparatide and others. He has participated in CMO selection for clinical and commercial production and led technology transfer activities to multiple facilities across the globe. Mr. Ware has directed the Purification Development department at Ligand (formerly Pfenex Biopharmaceuticals) since 2014, with increasing organizational responsibilities including partner due diligence, project scope supporting business development, budgeting, and talent development. Prior to his duties at Ligand, Mr. Ware worked in the Protein Biochemistry department at Biogen Idec, contributing to the development of multiple biologics. Leading up to his career in Biotechnology, he served in the United States Marine Corps where he honed his teamwork, problem solving and organizational leadership skills. Mr. Ware holds a bachelors degree in Biochemistry/Chemistry from the University of California San Diego.
